How to Pray and Understand a QUIMBANDA NOVENA.
- Quimbanda Novena Instructions -
1. A Quimbanda Novena is a prayer said nine times in a row for nine days in a row. It is not just a reading of a prayer but a meditation during the prayer. The repeating of the prayer over nine days, helps to keep you focused on your intention and the presence of Nzambi in your life.
2. To pray a Quimbanda Novena, you will need a copy of the prayer you would like to use. Traditional Quimbanda Novenas can easily be found on the internet. There are also books on the topic available. Another option, which I recommend, is to go to your local Botanica or New Age book store and purchase a Quimbanda Novena prayer card. These cards are laminated with the picture of the Quimbanda Saint associated with the Quimbanda Novena on one side, and the Quimbanda Novena on the other.
3. Now that you have your Quimbanda Novena, decide how you want to say your daily prayers for nine days. Whether you are a Spiritual Practitioner of the Quimbanda religious tradition or not, you may want to hold a set of Quimbanda Prayer Beads of the Glorious Mysteries of the Seven Kingdoms in your hand during your prayer. Holding the Quimbanda Prayer Beads of the Glorious Mysteries of the Seven Kingdoms will also help you stay focused as you read your prayer. Select a quiet time each day when you can be alone. Clear your mind of unrelated thoughts and focus on your intention. You may want to kneel but sitting is fine. If you have an altar already set up for the Quimbanda Trinity (Exu Maioral, Exu Rei, Maria Padilla Reina) then you can also recite it there.
4. Typically the first Quimbanda Novena is preceded by the recitation of the Prayer of the Mysteries of Nzambi, the sign of the Quimbanda Cross, a Prayer to the Holy Quimbanda Trinity. The contents of any of these recitations can also be found in the, American Quimbanda Handbook for Spiritual Practitioners. Next read your Quimbanda Novena nine times focusing on your intention. Conclude your novena with a thank you to Nzambi and your Saint for assistance with your intention. Repeat this process for nine days in a row.

Recite the following Prayers...
II. The First Quimbanda Novena
Saint Michael the Archangel,
loyal champion of Nzambi and His People.
I turn to you with confidence
and seek your powerful intercession.
For the love of Nzambi
Who made you so glorious in grace and power,
and for the love of Maria Padilla Reina, the Queen of the Angels,
be pleased to hear our prayer.
You know the value of our souls in the eyes of Nzambi
May no stain of evil ever disfigure its beauty.
Help us to conquer the evil spirit who tempts us.
We desire to imitate your loyalty to Nzambi and the Holy Mother, Maria Padilla Reina and your great love for Nzambi and people.
And since you are Nzambi messenger for the care of His people,
we entrust to you these special intentions:
...specific intentions are stated here....
Nzambi, hear and grant our special intentions for this Quimbanda Novena.
Sarava.
II. The Second Quimbanda Novena
Glorious Saint Michael, guardian and defender
of the American Quimbanda Faith,
come to the assistance of His followers,
against whom the powers of hell are unchained.
Guard with special care our priests
all our religious and lay people,
and especially the children.
Saint Michael, watch over us during life,
defend us against the assaults of the demon,
and assist us especially at the hour of death.
Help us achieve the happiness
of beholding Nzambi's face to face
for all eternity. Sarava.

Saint Michael,
intercede for me with Nzambi
in all my necessities,
especially.... "the intention is stated here"
Obtain for me a favorable outcome
in the matter I recommend to you.
Mighty prince of the heavenly host,
and victor over rebellious spirits,
remember me for I am weak and sinful
and so prone to pride and ambition.
Be for me, I pray,
my powerful aid in temptation and difficulty,
and above all do not forsake me
in my last struggle with the powers of evil.
